Pathology Services autopsy service provides support for both the
Palmetto Health campuses, as well as providing forensic
pathology services for Richland County. The main objective for
hospital-generated autopsies is clinical-pathological correlation.
The information collected from the autopsy is discussed with the
clinician and, if necessary, with family members to provide relevant
details of the patient’s life. Family members may contract
with the autopsy service for a private autopsy on a fee per service
basis.
A forensic autopsy is usually conducted for people who have died
as a result of an unnatural, untimely, or suspicious death. These
cases are under the jurisdiction of the Richland County Coroner
who authorizes the autopsy. The information gained from the examination
is intended to not only provide information for the cause of death,
but also the manner of death.
